Design Review
Design Collaboration & Review
On-call structural and BIM expertise for what doesn't fit a standard design scope — peer review, expert opinion, owner's representation, BIM coordination, due diligence, and early-stage advisory.
What This Covers
Peer Review
Independent review of another engineer's structural design or calculation package. I review the work against the applicable code, flag discrepancies, and produce a written peer review letter or report. Used for owner verification, lender requirements, permit-required third-party review, and quality assurance for firms handling significant projects.
Expert Opinion
Written professional opinion from a licensed PE for owners, attorneys, insurers, and HOAs. Structural condition, cause of damage, code compliance, construction defect, or repair adequacy. Formal enough for legal proceedings, written clearly enough for a non-technical audience.
Owner's Representative
Represent a building owner's structural interests through design and construction. Review structural decisions as they're made, flag issues before they become change orders, ask the questions a non-engineer can't, and make sure the structure the owner is paying for is the structure they intended to build.
BIM Coordination Lead
Set up and run model coordination for projects without in-house BIM staff — federated model assembly, Navisworks clash detection, BIM execution plan, coordination meeting facilitation, and issue-log management. Available as a standalone service even when structural design is with another engineer. See the Collaboration page for more on how we run model coordination.
Due Diligence
Structural assessment for property acquisition — single asset or portfolio. Identify structural issues that affect value, risk, or planned use before closing. Delivered as a formal PE report. Portfolio reviews can be scoped and sequenced for acquisition timelines.
Code Consulting
Interpretation and pathway advice for permit situations where the applicable code isn't clear, where an alternative means and methods argument is needed, or where BDS comment letters are outrunning the design team's ability to respond clearly. I write clear, direct responses to BDS and jurisdiction comments.
Early-Stage Advisory
Feasibility assessment, structural concept options, and budget-level guidance before design starts. Identify structural constraints early — before the architect has committed to a layout that doesn't work structurally. One hour of early advisory is worth more than three rounds of late redesign.
Who Hires This
- Architects who need a structural sounding board without a full structural fee — early design, feasibility, or a second opinion on a detail
- Building owners who want their own engineer in the room, not the design team's engineer
- Attorneys who need a clear, defensible structural opinion for a dispute, claim, or HOA matter
- Developers doing structural due diligence on an acquisition
- General contractors stuck on a code interpretation or need a PE opinion on a field condition
- Engineering firms that need surge BIM coordination capacity without hiring
How It Works
- Hourly — for advisory, review, and short engagements: $185–$225/hr
- Fixed fee — for defined deliverables: written opinion, peer review letter, due-diligence report, BIM execution plan
- Retainer — for ongoing on-call access through a project or a development cycle
FAQ
Can you review another engineer's work?
Yes — independent peer review of structural designs and calculation packages is a core part of this service. I review the work, document findings, and provide a written peer review letter or report. I'll be direct about what I find.
What does owner's representative mean in practice?
It means you have a licensed PE at the table who is working for you — not the design team, not the contractor, not the lender. I review structural decisions, flag issues, and make sure the owner's structural interests are represented through design and construction.
